III. Taxi

The taxi ride from the airport to the hostel should not cost more than S$15 before midnight and S$21 after midnight. During peak hours, 7am - 930am / 5pm - 8pm, price will be about S$19. These prices are for the normal taxis only (the blue or yellow ones); you should avoid the limousines, vans and London black cabs, because they are all much more expensive.

Of course, the journey might be more expensive if the driver is lost or decides to take a longer route. ALWAYS get a MACHINE PRINTED receipt from the taxi driver in case theres any unhappiness over price, route or manners of the driver. Most taxi companies in Singapore take complaints very seriously and will provide a satisfactory result in such cases.

Taxis in Singapore have fare meters; do not accept any “offers” of flat rates!

There are a number of surcharges for taxis, including the S$3 airport charge, 50% surcharge after midnight (lasts until 06:00) and the peak hour surcharge of S$2 from 07:30 until 09:30 and from 17:00 until 20:00 for certain taxi companies.

For door to door transport, there is a cheaper alternative with the Changi Airport Shuttle Bus. The price is S$9 but you may have to wait abit for the 19 seater bus to fill up enough for the driver to start the journey.

Cycling into Singapore

From Changi Airport, the only road out is by the East Coast Parkway Expressway. This is a "highway" which means that cycling on it is strictly forbidden. From the airport arrivals hall to the nearest non-highway road is roughly about 1km.

If you are taking the taxi from the airport and wish to get on the bike as soon as possible, you can request the driver to drop you at East Coast Food Centre. Taxi fare should be well under S$12. Here, drag your boxes to the tables facing the sea and preferrably one with an umbrella. Fresh lime juice and sugar cane juice is available from the drinks stalls.

Once you are nice and ready, you can cycle westwards towards the city on the bicycle path. To get to Betel Box Hostel, turn off at the Marine Parade underpass. Please note that these days, you are no longer allowed to cycle in underpasses and pedestrian bridges. Once you are out, just head north, you are already on Joo Chiat Road.

If you are coming in from Johor Bahru, Malaysia, the journey is abit more involved and depends if you are cycling the whole way or coming in by train.
